September 4th marks World Sexual Health Day, a celebration aimed at raising awareness and educating people about sexual issues, education in this area, and the importance of the sexual sphere in human life, just like all other disease-related events throughout the year.
Sexual Health
According to the World Health Organization, sexual health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free from coercion, discrimination, and violence.
Anything that falls short of enjoying that state can be a cause for a sexual health problem, and due to social factors, it is a taboo subject that, in many cases, prevents patients from being diagnosed and treated. This causes significant problems, both for the individual experiencing them and for their environment, as the consequences affect both physical and psychological well-being.
Lack of knowledge, social taboos, and limited access to adequate resources (psychologists, clinics, diagnostic tests, etc.) make it very important to raise public awareness about these issues, which is why World Sexual Health Day is celebrated.
Activities for World Sexual Health Day
Under the motto “Love and Intimacy in Sexual Health, a possibility for all people,” which is the focus of this year’s activities, the aim is to emphasize the psychological and emotional aspects of sexual relationships, as well as to treat them as part of individuals’ private lives.
“It is proposed to break the idea that sexuality is only about having sex, to integrate its emotional aspects, and the human need to connect. The joyful part will be sharing our own sexual health and sexuality with someone we love or have chosen.”
World Sexual Health Day is a relatively new global celebration, which relies on the committed and voluntary work of health professionals from more than 44 countries. With this initiative, the organizers aim for September 4th to be recognized internationally by the UN as World Sexual Health Day (WSHD).
