Isabella Izquierdo is the author of the new dissertation from the Master in Clinical and Health Psychology‘Racism: an approach to social phobia’ from the Dissertation Corner, the ISEP Training space that allows online consultation of the best dissertations by ISEP students.
Izquierdo reflects on unfounded prejudices or stereotypes about an individual. Classifying people is easy to do, but it is very difficult to prevent people from being swayed by those obvious characteristics of an individual, which are not determinant of their personality. The problem begins when an individual alters their judgment about another person based on that distinction. The hypothesis for the following study is to be able to approximate the characteristics of the racist actor by comparing them with the criteria for social phobia according to the DSM-IV, and thus determine if the racist subject can be understood as having a psychological disorder. Izquierdo bases her idea on the fact that racism causes people to be unable to tolerate contact with people of other races or cultures, leading them to avoid situations to prevent contact with them, and sometimes experiencing anxiety when they have to be in such a situation.
