The association between dementia and depression is increasingly verified. This is confirmed by Neurology with two studies published on July 6th about how depression can lead to dementia
The study, which was conducted over 17 years, investigated more than 900 depressive individuals with an average age of 70 who did not suffer from any dementia. Participants underwent tests to analyze possible depressive symptoms.
The research concluded that there is a 70% higher risk for depressive individuals to develop some form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s.
It is important for psychology professionals to specialize in dementias so that they can attend to this increasingly common patient profile, due to the considerable increase in life expectancy.
