What We Don’t Know About Clinical Psychology

On this occasion, we have the collaboration of our former master’s student in Clinical and Health Psychology Rebeca Jorge, who provides us with a professional and very personal approach to Clinical Psychology. If you want to share your knowledge and experiences in the field of psychology, contact us!.

We leave you with Rebeca’s professional experience.

When should I go to a psychologist? Is my problem that serious? How do I know if they are the right professional for what’s happening to me? I’m a bit embarrassed to tell a stranger my problems…

These are some of the many questions people ask themselves when they notice a problem interfering with their life and need help. And it’s not surprising; nowadays, there’s a great lack of information about the psychologist’s role.

Each of them follows an orientation, a baseline from which their treatments begin. Unlike medicine, which treats the body, whose anatomy is the same in all people, psychology works with the mind, something so controversial and difficult to study that it must be approached from different perspectives.

One of them is clinical psychology. It is the “empirical” or scientific part of psychology. It focuses on multiple areas, but especially on what happens to the person here and now, and on their thoughts and behaviors. To debunk a bit that myth of “magic” that always surrounds psychology, we can say that it is based on using tools and techniques that, through controlled experiments, demonstrate their effectiveness in treating certain disorders. It should be noted that all of this is based on quantifiable and measurable theories and data, obtained through tools, statistics, and psychometric tests. That is why clinical psychology is not magic, and it is categorized within the branch of health sciences.

This does not mean that other therapies are not valid. Other techniques and ways of working may work for a person, which is why the ideal is always for a psychologist to embrace as many orientations as possible in order to use one or another depending on the patient’s demand.

It is difficult nowadays to know which psychologist to go to, who is the best to treat a problem. However, the only thing that is clear is that the problem will continue to affect multiple areas of our lives if we don’t even try to find a solution.
