How to Learn to Study

From birth until death, we have the capacity to learn, acquire new knowledge, study, and forget. Without realizing it, we learn through observation, experimentation, trial and error, repetition, and interaction. We carry a genetic heritage that constantly interacts with the culture we belong to, which enables maturation and the essential learnings to survive and evolve as a species.

Differences between learning and studying

Studying is memorizing a subject that will later be used for an academic purpose: “I study to pass the exam.” Learning is acquiring knowledge and making it our own, in such a way that this information will be stored in our memory and will be used again and again. Thanks to its use, what is learned is not forgotten; it is internalized, modified, and becomes part of daily actions.

Therefore, studying is not the same as learning. If what is studied is significant, meaningful learning occurs, the knowledge is internalized and used. In contrast, if it is not used within a short period, our brain will eliminate it, and this information will be stored in a corner of our brain.

Factors influencing learning

Various variables influence learning; below, we detail the most important ones:

Age

The stage from 0 to 7 years is when the most important and significant learning occurs. Acquired knowledge such as language, walking, and interaction with others will propel new knowledge and new neural connections. However, the brain is capable of continuing to acquire new knowledge, modifying itself, and evolving.

Motivation to foster learning

Motivation is the engine of learning. Motivation and perseverance are essential elements for learning and studying.

Emotions

Emotions facilitate concentration, perseverance, and motivation for studying. If there is an emotional balance, the capacity for concentration, information retrieval, manipulation, and internalization will increase.

Study habits

Having a study place without stimuli prepares the brain for studying. A study schedule helps discipline consistency and concentration for studying and organizing the schedule according to the subject to be studied (start with the most difficult, continue with easier material, and finish with a review).

Study techniques that facilitate studying

Outlines, conceptual maps, and highlighting are effective techniques for studying all material effectively.

Therefore, we learn to study from childhood to adulthood. With good study habits, motivation, and perseverance, we have a wide range of opportunities to continue progressing in our daily and academic learning.
